Enchanted Mirror with Spooky Apparitions

Turn an ordinary wall mirror into a haunting portal showing a faint, ghostly figure trapped behind the glass. This clever DIY uses printable translucent ghost images and simple lighting tricks to create a classic “Pepper’s Ghost” illusion. When the room lights are bright, it looks like a normal decorative mirror, but when the lights dim, a pale, sorrowful face appears to emerge from the depths of the glass.

To achieve this effect, find a vintage-style framed mirror with a removable back. Carefully scrape away small, strategic patches of the reflective silver coating on the back of the glass using steel wool or a paint scraper, creating a worn, distressed look. Place a printed, desaturated grayscale image of a ghostly figure directly behind the scraped sections. Seal the back with a dark gray backing board. When light hits the mirror from the front, the ghost is barely visible, but when backlit or viewed from an angle in dim light, the figure hauntingly appears through the distressed glass.
