Apocalypse-Ready Distressed Specimen Jars

3

Bring the creepy atmosphere of a mad scientist’s abandoned laboratory into your home with distressed specimen jars. This craft turns ordinary glass jars from your recycling bin into ancient, dusty vessels containing mysterious and unsettling biological curiosities. Filled with eerie items submerged in tinted water, these jars look incredibly realistic when back-lit by dim, amber fairy lights, making them the perfect addition to a bookshelf, kitchen counter, or bathroom vanity.

To create this look, gather glass jars of various shapes and sizes. Print out vintage-style apothecary labels, stain them with wet tea bags or coffee grounds to simulate age, and singe the edges carefully with a lighter before gluing them to the jars. Fill the jars with creepy-crawly plastic items like spiders, fake eyeballs, rubber bats, or textured faux botanicals. Fill the jars with water and add a single drop of green, yellow, or blue food coloring to give the liquid a murky, preserved appearance. Rub a small amount of dark brown acrylic paint or petroleum jelly mixed with cocoa powder onto the outside of the glass to simulate decades of accumulated grime.
