Haunted Portrait Gallery with Moving Eyes
Create a classic haunted house experience right in your hallway by setting up a gallery of vintage family portraits whose eyes seem to follow you as you walk past. This project uses thrifted picture frames, old-fashioned black-and-white photos, and a simple depth illusion to create a subtle, unsettling effect that will make your guests double-take in disbelief.
Find antique-looking frames at thrift stores and paint them in dark, moody colors. Print out vintage Victorian or Edwardian portraits in black and white. Carefully cut out the pupils of the eyes on the portrait using a precision craft knife. Place a second copy of the same photo, or simply a dark background with painted eyes, about half an inch behind the main portrait inside the frame. The physical gap between the cut-out eye holes and the background image creates a hollow depth effect, making the eyes appear to rotate and follow anyone who walks across the room.
