19. Masking Tape Mummy Paintings

19

This clever resist-art technique allows toddlers to create clean, professional-looking art lines while enjoying free-form painting. By using tape to block out areas of the paper, your child can paint wildly across the page, only to reveal a perfectly defined mummy underneath once the tape is peeled away. It is an exciting process that feels like a magic trick to young minds.

Crisscross strips of masking tape or painter’s tape across a sheet of white cardstock to create a mummy bandage pattern. Let your toddler paint the entire sheet of paper with watercolor paints or watered-down tempera paint, covering all the white spaces. Once the paint is completely dry, gently peel away the tape to reveal the clean, white “bandages” underneath. Stick two googly eyes onto the canvas to complete the mummy look.
