19. Abstract City Skyline at Night

10

Capture the vibrant energy of a bustling metropolis with an abstract city skyline that focuses on color and reflection rather than architectural detail. Start by painting the top half of your canvas in deep blues and blacks to represent the night sky, and the bottom half in a slightly lighter shade of the same colors to represent water. In the center, where the sky meets the water, paint a series of simple vertical rectangles of varying heights to represent buildings.

Using a palette knife loaded with vibrant yellows, oranges, reds, and whites, apply quick, horizontal dabs of paint across the buildings to represent glowing windows. To create the reflection of the city lights in the water below, use a damp, flat brush to pull those bright colors vertically downward into the lower half of the canvas, then softly sweep horizontally across them to mimic ripples. This simple technique creates a highly atmospheric, romantic cityscape that is incredibly easy to achieve.
