11. Negative Space Botanical Silhouettes
Negative space painting is a wonderful concept that flips the traditional painting process on its head. Instead of painting an object on a background, you paint the background around the object. To start, collect some interesting leaves or ferns from your garden, or cut out paper silhouettes of botanical shapes. Place these flat shapes onto your blank canvas, securing them lightly with a tiny piece of double-sided tape so they do not slide around.
Next, paint over the entire canvas, including the edges of the leaves, using a beautiful color palette of your choice. You can use sponges, stippling brushes, or spray paint to build up color around the silhouettes. Once the paint is semi-dry, carefully peel away the leaves or paper cutouts. You will be left with crisp, stark white silhouettes of the plants, surrounded by a vibrant, textured explosion of color. This technique is highly satisfying and teaches beginners how to see and utilize negative space effectively in their compositions.
