12. Mid-Century Modern Abstract Collage

6
Mid-century modern art is characterized by clean lines, organic curves, and a nostalgic color palette of mustard, teal, avocado green, and rust. This project allows you to combine painting with collage for a highly tactile, multi-layered look. Start by painting a few sheets of heavy paper with different solid colors and patterns, such as stripes or dots. Once dry, cut or tear these painted papers into various organic shapes, such as kidneys, teardrops, and asymmetrical blobs.

Arrange these paper shapes on your canvas, overlapping them until you find a composition that feels balanced and visually interesting. Glue them down securely using matte gel medium. To tie the collage together, paint directly over and around the shapes with a few bold, black lines or solid geometric blocks. The combination of the clean, cut edges of the paper and the organic brushstrokes of the paint creates a beautiful, retro-inspired piece that adds a sophisticated touch to any modern interior.
