16. Distressed Spellbook Cover
Turn an ordinary, inexpensive notebook or old textbook into a legendary book of spells that looks like it was recovered from an ancient coven. Start by using hot glue to draw raised designs onto the cover of the book—think mystical runes, crescent moons, or a creeping ivy border. You can also glue a plastic eye in the center to create an eerie “living” book. Next, drape a layer of wet paper towels or tissue paper soaked in Mod Podge over the entire cover, pressing it into the hot glue lines to create a wrinkled, leathery texture.
Once dry, paint the entire cover with matte black or deep brown acrylic paint. To make the texture pop, use a dry-brush technique with metallic gold, bronze, or copper paint over the raised designs and wrinkles. Seal the book with a matte varnish. Display your completed spellbook open on a wooden book stand, surrounded by dried herbs and dripping candles, to create a captivating, mystical vignette.
